Ecosystem overview

An active ecosystem of partners surrounds Vates VMS at every layer of the stack:

  • Under the stack: hardware vendors validate servers and edge appliances with us.
  • On top of the stack: software vendors integrate storage, backup, desktop virtualization, network and monitoring solutions.
  • Around the stack: cloud and hosting providers run XCP-ng off premises.

This page gives the broad view; each domain has its own page in this section with the full details.

Initiated by Vates, the development of XCP-ng was conceived as an open-source alternative to Citrix XenServer, with a dedication to establishing a fully open-source virtualization solution suitable for production use in businesses. This venture also emphasized the importance of building a robust and diverse ecosystem to complement the platform. Technology partnerships are organized through the Vates Alliance Network, which maintains a public Solutions Compatibility List of validated third-party solutions.

The ecosystem around Vates VMSintegration points

Under the stack: hardware

2CRSi, Ampere and Bull validate server designs directly with us, from pre-installed mainstream racks to ARM and high-end sovereign platforms, alongside edge appliances tested by the XCP-ng team: see the Hardware ecosystem page. To check a specific server, network adapter or storage controller model, search the hardware compatibility list.

On top of the stack: software

Storage

Any array exposing iSCSI or NFS works with XCP-ng out of the box, and we maintain active partnerships with LINBIT (the technology behind XOSTOR), DataCore, Nexsan and Pure Storage: see the Storage ecosystem page.

VM backup

Xen Orchestra is the native, integrated backup solution, and Veeam, Commvault, NAKIVO, Bacula, Storware and Vinchin are officially compatible with XCP-ng: see the Backup ecosystem page for the details and positioning of each.

Virtual desktop (VDI)

UDS Enterprise, the first solution to join the XCP-ng ecosystem with an official Seal of Approval, brokers Windows and Linux virtual desktops and applications on top of the platform: see the Virtual desktop (VDI) page.

Network

VyOS, the open source network OS, is fully compatible with XCP-ng and ships with dedicated paravirtual drivers, and Xen Orchestra provides SDN capabilities for the platform itself: see the Network page.

Monitoring and optimization

The platform exposes its metrics natively to Prometheus and Grafana via OpenMetrics, and DC Scope and DC NetScope from EasyVirt are the only vendor solution in this category natively integrated into the platform, deployable directly from Xen Orchestra: see the Monitoring and optimization page.

Around the stack: hosting providers

Cloud Temple, IONOS, OVHcloud, Scaleway and Hetzner are known to host XCP-ng well, from sovereign SecNumCloud-qualified platforms to affordable dedicated servers: see the Hosting providers page.
